The Fire House
The Fire House
December, 2024
I designed this two-level firehouse at 159 East 87th Street in New York City as a vibrant live-work space for visiting artists. Inspired by Andy Warhol’s first studio, also in a firehouse, the project blends historic charm with modern functionality.
The first floor includes a studio, gallery, café, and workspace, while the second floor features a private apartment. A bold yellow block anchors the design, adding visual interest and defining spaces without sacrificing light. With ADA-compliant features and adaptable layouts, the firehouse is both inspiring and accessible.
Living Room
I designed this living room as part of an apartment intended to host visiting artists for short stays. The space was envisioned as functional and inspiring, maintaining comfort and elegance. A central design feature is the bold yellow block, which creates a sense of enclosure without compromising natural light.
In furnishing the living room, I selected pieces that combine aesthetics and practicality. The Samsung Frame TV integrates seamlessly into the design, doubling as an art piece when not in use. For seating, I chose Gubi Sejour Lounge Chairs, known for their elegance and comfort, along with the Wendelbo Calibre Side Table to add a refined touch
The color palette features a combination of yellow and light blue, which adds vibrancy while complementing the exposed concrete elements of the original structure. One of the challenges in this project was working around the structural columns. Instead of concealing them, I embraced their presence by designing a custom shelving unit that wraps around the concrete column. This approach transforms the column into a functional and intentional design feature.
Dining Room
Welcome to the dining room of my Fire House Project—a communal space designed for artists to gather and share meals. I wanted this room to feel vibrant yet cozy, with mustard-yellow chairs offering comfort and personality, perfect for long dinners and creative conversations. The light blue walls add a calming backdrop, while the bold black-and-white artwork keeps the energy flowing.
Cafe
I designed this small kitchen to feel like a cozy coffee shop! I wanted it to be fun, functional, and full of character. I used warm wood tones and added a bold green block around them to create a more stylish and cohesive design. I designed the tall cabinet to hide an existing structural column while adding extra storage and keeping the space looking clean and seamless. I also included movable furniture to keep things flexible and easy to rearrange when needed.
Guest Bedroom
This is a guest bedroom I designed for my latest project. The idea was to create a room that is welcoming, warm, and elegant. I chose rich, earthy tones to create a harmonious palette and soft bedside lamps, adding a touch of warmth.
I added plenty of storage above the bed to solve the lack of space—this idea helps utilize the spaces more efficiently. The large window with black blinds lets natural light flood in, enhancing the room’s inviting atmosphere.
Guest Bathroom
Here’s a look at the guest bathroom I designed to complement the adjoining bedroom. I wanted to keep the space modern yet timeless, with clean lines and soft lighting. The glass partition adds openness, allowing natural light to flow in, and the matte black fixtures provide a sleek contrast.
